NYC artist Rebecca Weber arriving in Berlin

After an historically eventful week on the east coast of the United States, first hit with a rare and major earthquake then days later being in the direct path of a hurricane the city of New York and its residents fared well. Irene the category 3 Hurricane was downgraded to a Tropical Storm by the time of it's landfall there sparing the city the wrath it could of caused in it's former state.

New York's John F. Kennedy Airport recently reopened and started to undo its massive tangle of delayed and cancelled flights. The artist Rebecca Weber made it to the terminal on time and her flight left the airport there last night with just a short delay. She is now somewhere over the Atlantic and on her way to Berlin for her first exhibition here.

Bringing with her the small scale oil paintings depicting various contraband items will accompany the drawings of Berliner artist Katharina Arndt in the upcoming Two Window Project exhibition 'Beauty Is the Hardest Drug'. Wishing her a safe landing and fair weather for her time here in our city.

Please join us Friday evening for the opening of this exhibition from 6:00 - 9:00 pm at the gallery and have a toast with the fine wines of southern Germany from the VDP German wine association. Both artist will be present.

I could spend a month just painting at the Mayan ruins.
The light is so beautiful, the sea so blue,
all I wanted to do was just sit and observe, taking it all in.
I had to read again, Hawthorne on Painting, in order to attempt a study of this place.

Potassium Iodide
Following the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster in April, 1986, a saturated solution of potassium iodide was administered to 10.5 million children and 7 million adults in Poland as a prophylactic measure against accumulation of radioactive iodine-131 in the thyroid gland. People in the areas immediately surrounding Chernobyl itself, however, were not given the supplement.

It was reported on March 16, 2011, that potassium iodide tablets were given to U.S. Naval air crew members flying within 70 nautical miles of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear plant damaged in the massive Japanese earthquake and ensuing tsunami on March 11, 2011.

This bottle has been in his refrigerator in New York since days following 9/11.

I hand picked these tri-colored carrots yesterday for a soup recipe I was developing. Their delicate root tendrils took more care in peeling than the average carrot, leaving more time to ponder their individual particularities. I began to think of them more as having personalities, deciding then to paint them as little portraits.

The Wye Oak was the honorary state tree of Maryland, and the largest white oak tree in the United States. The Wye Oak was believed to be over 460 years old at the time of its destruction during a severe thunderstorm on June 6, 2002.
It is believed that the acorn that became the oak germinated around the year 1540.
My friend and fellow painter,Charles Sheely, gave me a branch, clipped from a 10 year old sapling of this great old tree. This is the first year his tree has produced acorns.
I quickly jumped into painting the branch, sitting for hours trying to mix the right green, trying to create depth in the leaves. My first attempt failed miserably. Nature once again has kicked me in the ass, and made me question the mystery of observational painting.

Finally a few days, in late August, with clear skies. We decided to head to Delaware, Cape Henlopen. The campground is set on a WWII Army site. Visible still are the watch towers in the distance. We walked through the empty barracks and looked out over the arsenal, set back on the Great Sand Dune. Our meals cooked on the open fire and the sound of breaking waves in the night hours.

With Whistler in mind, I ventured back to my favorite spot. I tried to just concentrate on capturing temperature and light instead of detail. It was a hot day in June, but on the pier, a nice breeze was pushing the clouds along. If I could, I would do a whole exhibition on this vantage point. How fleeting the hour, still constant this statue .

A smoke screen is a release of smoke in order to mask the movement or location of military units.
I have been thinking of the ephemeral quality of smoke. This was on my mind when I painted forty candles,some of which I painted while they burned.
That was last year. Maybe this subject is one I should revisit, for this coming birthday.
Everything is so fleeting.

Lake Tahoe From Mountain Peak

The lake was formed about 2 million years ago and is a part of the Lake Tahoe Basin with the modern lake being shaped during the Ice Ages.
In December I was commissioned to paint a landscape from a photograph of this small island in a bay. One afternoon on this trip, as we were coming around the lake, there it was! This tiny island, the same vantage point as the painting.
It was Vikingsholm, along with the "Tea House" on Fannette Island and Emerald Bay.
I would like to think that somehow I was on the right path. Something was leading me in the right direction.

My childhood neighbor's one job was to empty the bag, once a week, in the summer, from this massive insect zapper. We would dump the bag on the ground and look for anything still intact. My entomological collection grew from this chore.

Period: Middle Paleolithic Period 80,000 - 40,000 years ago

Provenance: Fontmaure, West Central France

Mousterian tools that have been found in Europe were made by Neanderthals and date from between 300,000 BP and 30,000 BP
Neanderthals evolved from African apes along a path similar to humans.
Their stone tools were sometimes finished well enough to show some aesthetic sense. It is here that I am fascinated. That leap. That cognitive ability to "see" an object and realize from that abstract thought.
A rock is shaped into a tool.
A blank canvas into a work of art.

These are studies for a series of larger paintings, reflecting on stone tools that once were in the hand of the Neanderthal.

I love the smokestacks in the distance in Monet's "At Argenteuil".
Thinking about how quickly the landscape changes with time. I used to be able to see the harbor and the oil drums from my old studio window, within six months, new housing went up, along with roof top decks,and the view was gone.

One Summer I was noticing a willow tree, one that I would pass every day on my way to work. What an interesting tree. Willow trees are also quite prevalent in folklore and myths.
I cut a branch and fashioned a loop and hung it on my wall. Not but a day, lightening struck this old tree and split it in half.
The branch stayed pinned to my wall, the leaves turned yellow. I decided to paint it and title it,"That was then, This is then".
In Persian literature, the recognized adjective for 'willow' is lunatic (مجنون), and lover (or lovers' heart).

Sunny is a Korean woman who has the most beautiful corner florist stand in NYC.
Her place is 6th st and 2nd Ave. I have been visiting her for 2 years. I bought a nosegay of tulips and lilac in 16 degree weather. My plan was to paint and then give one of the paintings back to Sunny. The painting found it's way to an Argentinean priest. Funny how a day goes.

These are small studies of a nosegay that Sunny fashioned.

What a beautiful site, a Spanish Clementine, leaves still clinging, as if it were just picked. Found in a New York Grocery. Here is my attempt at trying to paint this fruit in under 10 minutes each. How to grab the color without thinking too much. Just a quick moment, indoors, smell of food on the stove, Berber music in background. Winter.

I seem to have started a tradition with my father and his Black Labrador . At the start of December, we head to the woods in search of the bittersweet vine. Some years our walk yields deer skulls, turtle shells. Our prize, bundles of brightly colored strands of vine, in an otherwise bleak landscape. This then adorns the gallery window. Not unlike past years, I love to sit and paint tiny paintings of this Bittersweet. Small quiet observations, another year has passed.

The Color of Interior Silence

I heard someone ask me last evening "what do you paint?" I paused and said "quiet moments". Inside I asked myself "why?" So today as I sit here and reflect. I realize that inside, my interior is everything but silent. A silent war.
More like Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket The only time there is silence is when I am painting.

Like a Moth to a Flame

A theory which has been advanced in an attempt to explain the attraction male moths have for candles specifically is based on olfaction. The spiky infrared spectra of a candle flame happens to contain a number of emission lines which coincide with the vibrational frequencies of the female moth's pheromone. The male moth is thereby powerfully attracted to the flame.

Watching the wood burn, we sat in silence. October seems colder than usual.

In the evening with the nights getting colder, leaves changing, I have been reading In the land of Temple Caves.
Reflecting on Paleolithic cave paintings of SW France, time and vestige. This all leads me back to Gustaf Sobin and Luminous Debris-poetic archaeology, a spiritual travelogue through vanished time. Just realizing that in 2005 he passed away,
what was I doing that I missed this?
Fall .
We found ourselves along a country road, a day of picking apples, next to an old graveyard. A vineyard with grapes left to wither on the vine. And what about Dionysus?
and the Roman Bacchus?
The god of wine and madness. "Cult of the souls" and his ability to preside over communication between the living and the dead. and Liber ("the free one") was a god of fertility, wine, and growth.

He pulled at the vine and gave it to me. "For you to paint".

It was difficult to see the statue. The heat and the haze darkens and softens the edges. The green patina not even visible, but this is summer and this is what I think about when walking the New York streets in the cold of winter. My eyes squinting from the sun. Sunbathers engaged in conversation, the sprinklers going off and the distant horns from West Side Parkway.

Thinking about Manet all this week, with the scent of peonies, brought to me by one of my oldest friends.
The brief peony was the full bloom of a rose to Manet. "And rose she lived the time of a rose, the space of one morning". I think of Manet's Last Flowers, roughly 20 paintings in all. The last one completed barely two months before his death. He said that an artist can say everything he has to say with "flowers, fruit, and clouds." I am sitting here painting these flowers, of which this blossom whose days of beauty are numbered, as it is with my own life.

Shard From Palatine Hill

I wanted something of Augustus. Walking Palatine Hill my eyes were going everywhere, I wanted to find something. I knew it was possible. The dirt used for the path was reused from the excavations. "look for unusual shapes" and there it was. This shard, this fragment. I slipped into my pocket. I laughed to myself, knowing it was Delft or certainly 19th century. No matter, it shared a time in that area and resurfaced to be reclaimed by me.
Rome has its origins on the Palatine. Indeed, recent excavations show that people have lived there since approximately 1000 BC.

View from Christopher Street Pier, Hudson River waterfront, New York City
It is summer when I can feel the grass under me at this west side pier. From here I can see the Statue of Liberty. The heat and the haze in the distance. I never considered painting such recognizable places until I started really looking. After hours of observation, one can begin to see the green patina that glimmers in just the right light in late afternoon. The limp flag on a day when the air is heavy. I come here again and again, each sitting a challenge to get my mind to just see the light.

Fly Fishing In My Mind....

I have been holding onto this Fly Fishing kit, that appears to be from the Turn of the Century. Today,I felt like I could see. So I started painting these lures, from New York and Scotland. Modern fly fishing is normally said to have originated on the fast, rocky rivers of Scotland and Northern England. A place that my ancestors came from.

Many credit the first recorded use of an artificial fly to the Roman Claudius Aelianus near the end of the 2nd century. He described the practice of Macedonian anglers on the Astraeus River:

...they have planned a snare for the fish, and get the better of them by their fisherman's craft. . . . They fasten red . . . wool round a hook, and fit on to the wool two feathers which grow under a cock's wattles, and which in colour are like wax. Their rod is six feet long, and their line is the same length. Then they throw their snare, and the fish, attracted and maddened by the colour, comes straight at it, thinking from the pretty sight to gain a dainty mouthful; when, however, it opens its jaws, it is caught by the hook, and enjoys a bitter repast, a captive.

The Sea of Galilee is known for its sudden storms, which are caused by moderate easterly or westerly winds. Just as I got into the water, sometime around 3 pm, the winds would start to cause the calm water, to become impossible to swim in. I sat on the edge and listened to the stones tumble onto the shore. The warm sun heading over the mountains beyond Tiberias. The once multi colored brown stones, have become bleached white.

"Wishing"

I have always made connections even when none existed. "Wishing" is a series of paintings of the wishbone from long past dinners, prepared for my significant other, painted on old Vanity Fair "Spy" illustrations.
Each issue of Vanity Fair at the time contained a full page color lithographic portrait of a well known sovereign, statesman or man of the day, caricatured in a uniquely good-natured manner which became famous as the 'Vanity Fair Style'. Working under the pseudonyms of 'Spy' (Sir Leslie Ward, 1851-1922) .

Wishing on and always contemplating my personal affairs. More paintings to come.

Last summer I was fortunate to join the Zinman Institute of Archaeology on their 9th season of excavations at Sussita/Hippos

Hippos was built on a flat-topped foothill of the Golan Plateau 350 meters above sea level and 2 kilometers east of the Sea of Galilee, near modernKibbutz Ein Gev. The site is just on the Israeli side of the 1949 UN-demarcated border between Syria and Israel.
Since my travel to Israel, I have spent more time researching the history of this area as well as the current political climate.

Barbed wire began to be widely used as an implement of war during World War I. Wire was placed either to keep a soldier confined or impede his movement forward. The human body moving against barbed wire can result in moderate to severe injuries to the skin.
I brought home a piece of barbed wire and began a series of paintings. I plan to hang these panels in a space, enclosing the room at mid length with the "barb wire". The paintings a quiet observation, reflecting on the object having been cut, it's purpose no longer needed.

This is a painting of bones from vial given to me by a really interesting woman that works at the Natural History Museum at Harvard. It is a rodent of some sort. And the vial is labeled "Anna" which always makes me laugh. It was such an amazing day. I saw a 10 ft fossil track that scientists have no idea what kind of creature made it. I got to see Blaschka Glass Models and hundreds of 19th century Taxidermy.

Hello Everyone,
There was such a response to the "40" painting project , and even more incoming requests from friends that wanted to participate, that I have decided to work on more paintings over the course of my 40th year.
The paintings will be of objects that deal with the evidence of the passage of time. Such as a Roman earring, a tumbled stone from the Sea of Galilee,a wilted flower. I will periodically post an image and it will go to the first person that responds for $40.
